Mayor Lowe announces launch of “Safe City” project to transform urban landscape
Mayor Malick Lowe of Banjul has announced the inauguration of the Banjul Safe City Project, a historic initiative aimed at reshaping the capital city’s future.
The event, graced by the presence of key figures including UNFPA The Gambia representative Madam Rose Sarr and various government officials, marked a significant step towards making Banjul a beacon of safety, sustainability, and prosperity.
The ceremony, attended by distinguished members of Banjul’s political landscape such as Hon Modou Lamin B Bah and Hon Abdulie Njai, witnessed the launch of this first-of-its-kind project in the subregion.
Boye, responsible for the Ministry of Local Government and Lands, Abdul Jobe, Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Rohey John Manjang, Minister of The Environment and Climate Change, Cladiayana Cole, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, and honorable Hamat Bah of Tourism and Culture were also present to lend their support.
Joining them were diplomats, permanent secretaries, business leaders, representatives from the Gambia Police Force and other Security Agencies, RAFELA – The Gambia, and the media, emphasizing the broad spectrum of stakeholders involved in the Banjul Safe City Project.
This ambitious modular development project aims to position Banjul as the cleanest, greenest, and brightest city in the region. Mayor Lowe highlighted the multifaceted goals of the initiative, including crime reduction, combating gender-based violence, creating safe spaces for vulnerable children, efficient waste management, and the preservation of coastline, wetlands, and marine biodiversity.
Expressing gratitude towards the resilient Banjul community, Mayor Lowe acknowledged the indispensable role of Engineering Consultant Mr. Latirr Carr, who tirelessly contributed to the project’s development.
The mayor concluded her announcement by expressing confidence in the collaborative efforts, stating, “Together we can achieve the impossible!”
As Banjul embarks on this transformative journey, the Banjul Safe City Project promises not only to enhance the quality of life for its residents but also to set a precedent for urban development in the subregion.
