Chad PM addresses transitional ‘turbulence’
The leader of Chad’s opposition, Yaya Dillo Djerou, was killed in a gun battle with security forces, heightening tensions in the capital N’Djamena. The incident occurred near the party headquarters, leading to a cascade of violence and uncertainty.
Chad’s Prime Minister, Masra, appointed in January 2024, expressed condolences not only for Dillo’s family but also for others who lost their lives in previous clashes between the government and opposition forces. Amidst the turmoil, Masra emphasized that an ongoing investigation aims to unveil the truth behind the recent attacks, which have claimed both military and civilian lives.
With the presidential election scheduled for May 6 and June 22, Masra encouraged Chadians to focus on the upcoming democratic process despite the current challenges. However, he refrained from divulging his own intentions regarding candidacy, highlighting the importance of personal choices in a democratic society.
The political landscape has been tumultuous since the death of former President Idriss Deby in 2021, with his son, Gen. Mahamat Idriss Deby, assuming power. The recent constitutional changes allow Deby to run for president, as approved by Chadian voters in December. Masra assured the public of the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition.
While addressing the nation, Masra urged unity and reconciliation, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful transition. The Prime Minister, who recently returned from exile in the U.S., shared his efforts to garner international support during his visit to Washington, focusing on security, counterterrorism, climate change, and humanitarian issues.
Beside the political challenges, Chad faces a humanitarian crisis with over a million refugees from Sudan seeking shelter. Masra stressed the urgent need for assistance from the international community, asserting that Chad is standing resilient and dignified, seeking support to realize their clear vision for the future.
As Chad navigates through this complex period, the Prime Minister’s call for unity and international collaboration remains pivotal, laying the groundwork for a stable and democratic future amidst the current turbulence.
