Embracing Opportunity: Let There Be Mutual Recognition and Peace in the Middle East
The events of October 7, 2023, marked by tragedy and loss, present an opportunity for transformative leadership and reconciliation between Israel and Muslim nations. Rather than defining this date solely by its pain and suffering, we must seize the moment to pursue mutual recognition and cooperation, paving the way for lasting peace in the region.
“For every difficulty brings an opportunity.” (HQ 94:5)
For nearly a century, the relationship between the Muslim world and Israel has been marked by conflict and hostility. Despite this, there have been missed opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. The establishment of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) initially aimed at preventing the creation of Israel, leading to decades of violent confrontations and stalemates.
It is time for a paradigm shift. Recognizing Israel’s sovereignty and right to exist as a Jewish nation within its historical land is not only a step towards peace but also an acknowledgment of the reality on the ground. The opposition to recognizing Israel has hindered economic progress and prosperity in the Muslim world, preventing opportunities for innovation and cooperation.
Israel, with its advanced knowledge in various fields, and the Muslim world, with its vast resources and youthful population, have the potential to foster unprecedented socioeconomic development and peaceful coexistence. By embracing cooperation and dialogue, both sides can benefit mutually and contribute to the well-being of the entire region.
“At this critical juncture, there are unique and transformative opportunities to be seized by both sides for mutual benefits, permanently.”
October 7, 2023, should not only be defined by death and destruction but also by the immense opportunity it presents for leaders to take transformative measures for the Middle East and the world at large. A two-state solution, with colonial borders adjustments by immediate neighbors, offers a viable path forward to achieving peace and security in the Holy Land.
It is imperative to acknowledge the undeniable connection that both Arabs and Jews have to the Holy Land. However, perpetuating hatred and violence is antithetical to the spirit of this sacred land. Israel’s ties to the land trace back to biblical times, with the United Nations recognizing its legitimacy in 1948.
Quoting the words of Moses to his people:
“O my people! Enter the holy land which Allah hath assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin.” (Qur’an 5:20, 21)
Similarly, Palestinians have a legitimate claim to a nationality, but this right should not be wielded as a tool for the deprivation of others’ nationality or the denial of their right to exist.
“While the Abraham Accords signify a positive step towards regional stability and cooperation, it’s essential to remember that these agreements echo a sentiment expressed over fourteen hundred years ago in the Quran.”
“Those who believe (in the Qur’an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,- anyone of them who believe in God and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Qur’an 2:62)
As we move forward, let us embrace this moment of opportunity and work towards a future of peace, prosperity, and mutual respect in the Holy Land. Together, let us build a future where the pain and suffering of the past are replaced by hope and healing, and where all inhabitants of the region can live in dignity and security.
NOW is the perfect time for the entire Muslim world to formally recognize the sovereignty and legitimacy of Israel as a Jewish nation in the Middle East.
