Gambia gov't responds to FGM debate, affirms commitment to anti-FGM law

In a long-awaited move, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, Fatou Kinteh, has finally addressed the simmering debate surrounding Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in The Gambia.

The government’s prolonged silence amid mounting pressure has drawn criticism, particularly after a bill seeking to repeal the anti-FGM law enacted in 2015 during the Yahya Jammeh regime made its way into parliament.

Sponsored by Foñi Kansala NAM Almameh Gibba, the contentious bill has progressed through the initial stages of parliamentary review, sparking public outcry and online activism demanding Minister Kinteh’s resignation for the apparent lack of response from the children’s ministry.

However, breaking her silence in a statement issued a week after the bill garnered support from 42 National Assembly Members (NAMs), Minister Kinteh clarified the government’s stance.

She emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the law prohibiting FGM, despite allowing the Private Member’s Bill to undergo due parliamentary process to demonstrate adherence to democratic principles and the rule of law.

“The Women’s Amendment Bill 2024 has now been referred to select committees for further consultation and expert opinion from specialized ministries, including Gender, Children, and Social Welfare; Ministry of Health; and Ministry of Justice,” stated Mrs. Kinteh.

Moreover, the government pledged to intensify awareness campaigns on the adverse effects of FGM, aiming to safeguard the welfare, health, and rights of women and girls across The Gambia.

Stressing the importance of coordinated efforts among various stakeholders, including state and non-state actors, Mrs. Kinteh underscored the nation’s commitment to advancing gender equality and protecting women’s and girls’ rights.

“In conclusion, The Gambia expresses appreciation for the efforts of development partners, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations for their continued support,” the statement affirmed.

As the debate on FGM continues to roil Gambian society, the government’s response signifies a critical juncture in navigating the delicate balance between cultural traditions and human rights advocacy.
