Kenya: President Ruto calls for mediation, urges elders, clergy to quell Kilgoris conflict
In the wake of escalating inter-clan clashes in Kilgoris, President William Ruto has issued a directive urging a coalition of politicians, community elders, and religious leaders to convene and seek a definitive resolution to the ongoing strife.
Addressing the issue during an interdenominational thanksgiving service for Tourism PS John Ololtua in Kilgoris on Sunday, President Ruto emphasized the imperative role of local leaders in fostering lasting peace amidst the simmering tensions.
Specifically, he called upon these stakeholders to devise a comprehensive strategy aimed at quelling the hostilities between the Irwa Shinkishu and Isiria clans.
“We must prioritize dialogue and collaboration among elders, community representatives, and church figures to address the root causes of the conflict and pave the way for sustained development,” President Ruto asserted.
Moreover, President Ruto affirmed the commitment of security forces to safeguarding civilian lives and property, thereby underscoring the importance of parallel efforts towards conflict resolution by local leaders.
However, amidst these calls for unity, Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina seized the opportunity to caution against the exacerbation of tensions by certain political figures. Pointing fingers at unnamed politicians, Senator Ole Kina condemned the incitement tactics employed to stoke land-related grievances among the populace.
“Genuine efforts towards peace must transcend political affiliations. It is imperative that all stakeholders prioritize the well-being of the affected communities over narrow political interests,” Senator Ole Kina emphasized.
In response, Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu refuted allegations of governmental inaction, citing ongoing collaborative efforts between the county administration and law enforcement agencies to mitigate the conflict’s fallout.
Nonetheless, the longstanding feud between the Irwa Shinkishu and Isiria clans persists, underscoring the urgent need for concerted mediation efforts to halt the cycle of violence that has claimed numerous lives over recent months. As tensions continue to mount, the fate of Kilgoris hangs precariously in the balance, awaiting a resolution that can restore peace and stability to the embattled region.
