Kenya: Tragic collision claims lives, leaves several Kenyatta University students seriously injured

A collision on Monday evening along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left 42 Kenyatta University students injured.
Among the injured, four critically wounded students were rushed to Agha Khan Hospital in Mombasa for urgent medical attention.
The tragic incident occurred at Pipeline near Maungu, where a university bus collided with a trailer, causing severe damage and injury.
The university community was left reeling from the shock of the accident, prompting swift action from authorities.
Responding promptly, Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor, Paul Wainanina, released a statement detailing the university’s efforts to aid the victims.
He disclosed that a specialized team comprising medical professionals, university security officers, and staff wellness officers was dispatched to the accident scene on Monday night from both the Main Campus and Mombasa Campus.
The statement reads:
“A Kenyatta University bus ferrying students, on their way to Mombasa for an academic trip was involved in an accident with a tractor trailer at Maungu, Taita Taveta County last night.
“Sadly, reports so far indicate there are student fatalities. The University
dispatched a team from the Main Campus and Mombasa Campus to the
accident scene last night to assess the situation, assist survivors and
provide accurate report.
“The team includes two doctors, medical personnel, University security officers as well as students’ and staff wellness officers. Some of the injured students are in the process of assessment for possible evacuation to Nairobi depending on their status.
“At the moment we are not able to share specific numbers and/or names
but can confirm that there are several fatalities involved. The University
will provide a more comprehensive report later today as information
becomes available. Kenyatta University is deeply saddened by the tragic accident.
“On behalf of the University Council and the University Management Board, I wish to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
“In the meantime the University has set up a Help Desk at Business
Students Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151 and Mobile No. 0202310709 or 0723 352 483 to respond to queries as we offer support and assistance during this challenging time.”
Wainanina emphasized the university’s commitment to providing support to the survivors and pledged to furnish a comprehensive report on the incident once all pertinent information was gathered. However, due to the gravity of the situation, specific details, including the exact number of casualties and identities of the victims, were not immediately available.
Furthermore, Wainanina announced plans to evacuate some of the critically injured students to Nairobi after a thorough assessment of their medical conditions. The university remains vigilant in its efforts to ensure the well-being and recovery of those affected by this tragic event.
