Manchester City faces uphill battle for record-breaking 4th straight Premier League title
In the aftermath of Sunday’s intense 1-1 draw at Anfield, Rodri expresses Manchester City’s determination to overcome the challenge of near-perfection in their remaining 10 matches to secure a historic fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Currently positioned in third place, a mere point behind table-toppers Arsenal, who lead on goal difference over Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s squad anticipates a pivotal clash against Arsenal at the end of the month, with formidable fixtures against Aston Villa and Tottenham on the horizon.
Despite Sunday’s draw marking only the second time City has dropped points in the league since mid-December, Spain midfielder Rodri exudes confidence, emphasizing the need for a strategic break before the upcoming challenges. “We need a break. We have the FA Cup game (against Newcastle) and then go to the international teams, so it will be good for us to refresh and give the last push at the end of the season,” he stated.
Acknowledging the team’s strength in the latter part of the season, Rodri emphasizes the necessity to recharge and focus on the final 10 games, recognizing the demanding nature of the Premier League title race. “It seems you have to win nine or 10 games to win this Premier League. This is the challenge, and we are going to go for it.”
Reflecting on the challenging encounter against Liverpool, Rodri admits that City was not at their best, despite taking an early lead through John Stones. “An incredible game. We started really well in terms of chances and dominance, and I think it was quite good. The second half was their half,” he commented.
Liverpool’s strong comeback in the second half, culminating in Alex Mac Allister’s equalizing penalty, posed a considerable threat, but Rodri emphasizes the significance of securing a point. “They are fighting for the Premier League like us, and we got a point. It means a lot. We are there in the fight, and this club is about the mentality of the team. Sometimes when we don’t play well, (it’s important) we don’t lose.”
In the face of challenging circumstances, Rodri maintains City’s adaptability and resilience. “Sometimes it is the opposite, and we are the team who has to defend a little bit more. We didn’t create many chances, and it is what it is; we have to adapt sometimes. We wanted three points, but in the final analysis, it is fair.”
