Nigeria energizing impact — OPEC secretary-general commends decades of positive contributions
The Secretary-General of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Haitham Al-Ghais, has lauded Nigeria for its remarkable contributions to the organization since joining in 1971.
Speaking at the 7th Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES 2024) in Abuja, Al-Ghais emphasized Nigeria’s critical role and integral presence within OPEC.
Al-Ghais acknowledged Nigeria’s outstanding contributions, attributing them to the country’s influence on pivotal decisions within OPEC. He expressed his admiration for the valuable roles played by Nigerian public servants who held positions such as OPEC Secretary-General and President of the OPEC Ministerial Conference.
During his first official visit to Nigeria since assuming office, Al-Ghais congratulated the nation for hosting the widely attended summit, calling it a crucial gathering for Africa and the world as energy takes the lead in global discussions. He engaged in discussions with Nigerian dignitaries, exchanging views on the global energy market, transition, and its implications.
The OPEC Secretary-General stressed the importance of energy security and commended the summit for addressing energy poverty in Africa. He highlighted the need to discuss energy transition while considering the dependence on conventional sources like oil and gas.
Al-Ghais drew attention to the historical ties between Nigeria and OPEC, both emerging in 1960. He expressed confidence that the flourishing relationship would continue, emphasizing Nigeria’s significance as the largest oil producer in Africa and a key player on the global stage. Recognizing the pivotal role of oil in Nigeria’s economy, he affirmed its enduring importance in the nation’s development for decades to come.
