Five Kenyan police officers charged after notorious serial killer escapes custody

Five Kenyan police officers found themselves in the dock on Wednesday, accused of facilitating the escape of a suspected serial killer and 12 other inmates from a Nairobi police station.

The escapee, identified as Collins Jumaisi was apprehended last month in connection with the gruesome murders of at least six women.

Their bodies were discovered wrapped in plastic bags in an abandoned quarry, which has since become a makeshift dump.

Jumaisi’s alleged confessions have sent chills through the community, as he reportedly admitted to killing 42 women, including his own wife.

However, his lawyer claims that these admissions were extracted under torture, a statement that prosecutors vehemently deny.

The escape has sparked widespread fear among local residents, particularly with the school holidays underway.

“We aren’t sure whether the claims are true or false. We don’t know whether he used to collaborate with others. We are worried more now that schools are on holiday and our young girls are at home, and you find that sometimes we send our children for errands at night. We don’t really know our fate because the quarry itself has not yet been backfilled. We are not okay. We are really worried,” expressed a concerned police representative.

The Kenyan police have indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the escape was aided by insiders within the station. A police report confirmed that Jui and the 12 Eritrean nationals were found missing from their cells after cutting through the wire mesh covering their window.

In response to the alarming situation, authorities have initiated a manhunt, with a court hearing where prosecutors requested the detention of the implicated officers for two weeks. This time is needed to allow law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the officers’ alleged complicity in the escape.
