Gambia: CRC releases constitution draft for public review
The Gambian Constitution Review Commission (CRC) has released constitution draft for public review.
Following extensive deliberation, the Draft will be tabled before the National Assembly after a comprehensive period of public gazetting.
The Draft Constitution will be available for public scrutiny and feedback for three months initially, followed by an additional ten-day period, adhering to the procedural requirements stipulated in the 1997 Constitution.
The Draft Constitution is a reflection of The Gambia’s national values and ethos, reinforcing the country’s status as a sovereign, independent republic grounded in multi-party democracy and periodic elections based on universal adult suffrage.
It recognizes and upholds fundamental human rights and freedoms for all individuals, irrespective of nationality, aligning with the nation’s longstanding beliefs and values.
In a groundbreaking development, the Draft introduces term limits for the office of the President, a first in The Gambia’s constitutional history. This provision aims to foster democratic governance and prevent the entrenchment of power, ensuring a healthy rotation of leadership.
The Draft also establishes mechanisms for justice and accountability, particularly targeting atrocious crimes. This is a significant step towards strengthening the rule of law and ensuring that those who commit serious offenses are held accountable.
The Draft Constitution is accessible to the public at the Gambia Printing and Publishing Corporation and on the Ministry of Information’s website. The government encourages all citizens to engage with the Draft, providing feedback and suggestions as part of the democratic process.
