Algerian presidential election sees high hopes for democracy, economic progress
On September 7, 2024, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune cast his vote in Algiers during the country’s presidential election, where two other candidates are competing for the top position. Tebboune, who is seeking re-election, praised the peaceful and civil electoral campaign, commending all three candidates for presenting a positive image of democracy in Algeria.
By mid-day, 13.11% of the 24 million registered voters had already participated in the election. President Tebboune expressed optimism about Algeria’s future, emphasizing his vision to make the country the second-largest economy in Africa and ensure a genuine democracy that upholds the rights of all citizens.
Nicknamed “Uncle Tebboune” by his campaign, the 78-year-old leader was first elected in 2019 following a period of intense protests that led to the resignation of his predecessor. His vision remains focused on economic development and improving the quality of life for all Algerians.
