Tunisia strengthens electoral process ahead of presidential election

Tunisia's presidential election

Tunisia’s parliament passed a law on Friday aimed at empowering the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) as the country prepares for its 2024 presidential election. The amendment removes judicial intervention in decisions made by the electoral authority, reinforcing its autonomy and ensuring a smoother election process.

This move, supported by a majority in parliament, is intended to safeguard Tunisia’s democratic progress and enhance transparency in upcoming elections. President Kais Saied, who is seeking re-election, has emphasized the importance of the law in maintaining Tunisia’s sovereignty and preventing foreign influence.

Although some opposition groups voiced concerns, supporters argue that the reform will reduce disruptions and streamline the election process, allowing citizens to focus on the candidates and their platforms.
