Community radio stations in the Sahel call for stronger protection of journalists amid rising security risks

Journalists in the Sahel region are calling for increased protection as community radio stations and media freedom groups raise concerns about escalating violence against media professionals. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reported on Tuesday, September 24, that despite the growing challenges, the role of local journalists remains vital in providing access to information in the region.

Since November last year, two community radio journalists were killed and two others kidnapped by armed groups in Mali and Chad. In response, 547 community radio stations from 16 West African countries, alongside RSF, have united to advocate for media freedom and urge authorities to safeguard journalists’ rights. They are particularly focused on combating impunity for crimes committed against media personnel.

Community radio stations, established in the 1990s, have consistently been a cornerstone of the region’s media landscape, ensuring that crucial information reaches local communities. These radio journalists often serve as the only professionals with access to isolated and conflict-affected areas.

Despite threats from armed groups and accusations of crackdowns on dissenting voices in regions ruled by military leaders, the media remains steadfast in its mission. The appeal underscores the importance of protecting journalists to ensure the continued flow of information and the promotion of democratic values in the Sahel.
