WHO steps up efforts to support Rwanda in containing Marburg virus outbreak
Rwanda’s health authorities, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), are making significant strides in controlling the Marburg virus outbreak, which has affected several districts. With more than 20 cases confirmed and fatalities reported, the country is intensifying efforts to isolate and treat patients while closely monitoring those who came into contact with the virus.
The WHO, recognizing Rwanda’s robust public health emergency response system, plans to deliver essential medical supplies from Kenya in the coming days. Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “We are working closely with Rwanda’s national authorities to enhance their ongoing efforts.”
Additionally, the WHO is ramping up cross-border measures to prevent further spread, underscoring the international commitment to containing the virus. Marburg virus disease, related to the Ebola virus, has a high fatality rate, but with Rwanda’s proactive approach and WHO support, there is hope for curbing the outbreak swiftly.
