Thousands rally in Accra over the weekend, standing together to demand action against illegal mining, also known as ‘Galamsey,’ which has had a significant impact on Ghana’s environment. The peaceful protest, held from Thursday to Saturday, showcased the commitment of Ghanaians to protect their country’s natural resources and hold the government accountable.

“We need to keep taking action, we need to keep protesting to catch their attention,” said one passionate attendee. “Illegal mining must stop in Ghana, and we won’t stop until it does.”

Unlike a previous protest in September, which saw police interference, this demonstration proceeded without any disruptions, reflecting the determination of the people to ensure their voices are heard.

In addition to the current protests, the Catholic church is preparing for a peaceful demonstration this Friday, while labor unions plan a nationwide strike on Thursday, all aimed at highlighting the need for decisive action against Galamsey.

“The lives of Ghanaians are being threatened by this illegal activity,” another participant stated. “It’s time for the government to act and for the people to keep pushing for change.”

Protesters are also calling for the release of those arrested during an earlier demonstration, emphasizing unity and justice in their fight to protect the environment and the future of Ghana.
