The U.S. Special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, has introduced a new roadmap aimed at reducing tensions in the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). A key component of this plan is the proposal to deploy international peacekeeping forces, focusing on safeguarding civilians caught in the violence.

In an effort to reinvigorate stalled peace talks, Perriello is working closely with the African Union to prepare and equip these forces. His initiative follows the release of a September report by the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, which highlighted the urgent need for impartial forces to protect civilians.

During a meeting in Nairobi, Perriello underscored the positive energy among diplomats despite the SAF’s boycott of previous negotiations. He expressed optimism about finding a resolution, stressing the importance of bringing the warring parties back to the negotiating table.

Experts are divided on the feasibility of deploying peacekeeping forces in Sudan, but many, including former UN spokesperson Khaled Dahab, believe that with adequate numbers and support, the intervention could succeed in protecting vulnerable populations.

Perriello’s roadmap aligns with ongoing efforts by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, whose recent visit to Port Sudan reflects growing international attention on finding a peaceful solution to the crisis.
