G20: Nigeria unveils renewed feeding programme to combat hunger, improve education

Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to ending hunger and advancing education with the relaunch of the Renewed Hope National Home Grown School Feeding Programme. This ambitious initiative was announced by Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), during a G20 side event in Brazil.

The feeding programme, set to commence in November 2024, aims to provide 20 million children with nutritious meals annually. Designed to boost educational outcomes and reduce child hunger, the scheme also supports local farmers and strengthens Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.

A standout feature is the School Farms Initiative, where schools will grow 10% of the food required, promoting agricultural learning and sustainability. Furthermore, the programme will involve 250,000 smallholder farmers, creating jobs and ensuring local food security.

By 2026, the government plans to reduce the number of out-of-school children by 30%, a significant step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). Funding will be bolstered by innovative models, with 30% of costs covered through private sector collaboration by December 2026.

Princess Orelope-Adefulire highlighted the transformative potential of the programme, stating: “This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to education and nourishment. By empowering smallholder farmers and integrating local food systems, we are building a sustainable future for our children.”

The initiative underscores Nigeria’s focus on tackling SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 4. Calling for global partnerships, the presidential aide urged stakeholders to support Nigeria’s drive towards inclusive development and sustainable growth.
