Banjul: Public-private partnership delivers on President Barrow’s development promise

The Gambian Government’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative is transforming infrastructure in Banjul, delivering on President Adama Barrow’s development vision.

On Monday, December 9, 2024, President Barrow conducted site visits as part of his annual presidential tour, inspecting ongoing projects that highlight successful collaborations with private sector partners.


At the Gambia Ports Authority, Managing Director Ousman Jobarteh, alongside the private partner Albayrak, provided an update on the clearing and upgrading of the container terminal. These upgrades aim to create more space and streamline ship docking and offloading processes. The improvements signify a major step forward for maritime efficiency in the capital.

President Barrow also visited the Banjul Project, focusing on the drainage system behind Gambia High School. The initiative aims to transform the drainage area into a multipurpose facility, improving wastewater management and creating recreational space. Engineer Karamo Jaiteh explained the technical process: “We are redirecting wastewater to establish a sustainable and efficient drainage system in Banjul.”

The President expressed enthusiasm about the road rehabilitation efforts around Albert Market, praising Gai Construction for their prompt work. He noted the project’s significance for residents and businesses, stating the importance of revitalizing Banjul’s infrastructure.

The Deputy Mayor of Banjul, Honourable Abdul Aziz Gaye, explained that the market dumpsite serves as a temporary collection point before waste is transferred to a permanent site. Meanwhile, vendors are witnessing tangible improvements. Tida Sawo, a vendor at Tobacco Road, applauded President Barrow’s commitment, saying: “You promised us, and you fulfilled it.”

Another vendor in the tourist market emphasized the road’s significance for tourism: “We the tourist market vendors are grateful. Now we can attract tourists for excursion trips to Banjul.”

Prominent businessman Mr. Salifu Jaiteh echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the boost the road has given to local commerce. The President’s unplanned visit drew enthusiastic locals, including Executive Coordinator Mr. Ebrima Jawo, underscoring widespread community support for the ongoing transformation.

With these initiatives, President Barrow’s administration, in partnership with the private sector, is delivering infrastructural progress that promises a cleaner, more efficient, and economically vibrant Banjul.
