ECOWAS holds regional meeting in Lagos to strengthen fiscal governance, tax harmonization
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a four-day Regional Follow-Up Meeting in Lagos, Nigeria, from December 16 to 19, 2024.
The gathering brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from ECOWAS Member States, the Africa Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), the West Africa Tax Administration Forum (WATAF), the West African Union of Tax Institutes (WAUTI), the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Bank, and other key partners.
During the event, Mr. Salifou Tiemtore, Director of Customs Union and Taxation, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of Mrs. Massandjé Litse-Toure, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture. He emphasized the vital role of regional initiatives in promoting fiscal unity and stability across West Africa.
“Regional directives and supplementary acts play a pivotal role in harmonizing tax policies, strengthening fiscal governance, and fostering economic stability,” Mr. Tiemtore stated.
His remarks underscored the collaborative effort to enhance tax systems and ensure more efficient economic management within the region.
The meeting aims to discuss the publication and implementation of these key fiscal policies, ensuring that West African nations are aligned in their economic strategies, thus contributing to more robust financial frameworks and greater economic cohesion across the region.
