Gambia: President Barrow hosts media dinner to strengthen government-media ties

In a groundbreaking event at the statehouse in Banjul, President Adama Barrow inaugurated the first-ever Presidential Media Dinner on Saturday, fostering a new era of collaboration between the Gambian government and the media.

The dinner, attended by journalists and media personalities from across the nation, underscored the importance of a harmonious relationship between the government and the media for national progress.

President Barrow, in his address, highlighted the indispensable role of the media in a functioning democracy.

“To realise these objectives and protect our shared values, like the Government, the media must function effectively and responsibly. In this light, I enjoin you to make the best use of your profession to take our country to a higher level,” he stated, urging media practitioners to uphold their watchdog role with integrity and professionalism.

Amie Bojang Sissho, Director of Press and Public Relations, praised the event as a milestone in fostering unity across different professional domains.

“This occasion is a significant demonstration of various professional roles in and outside government, all contributing towards the same goal—nation building,” she said.

She further acknowledged the evolving media landscape, reflecting on the government’s commitment to adapting to global changes.

“We have also extended a warm hand of friendship and cooperation to both the conventional and new or social media because we are fully aware and quite mindful of the transformation of the media landscape globally,” Bojang Sissho added, emphasizing the partnership cultivated since 2017.

The event served as a platform for dialogue, mutual appreciation, and the reinforcement of the media’s pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for The Gambia. The Presidential Media Dinner marks a promising step towards a more transparent, informed, and collaborative governance structure.
