International Ota Benga Day Set for December 10

In a groundbreaking effort to commemorate and honor the resilience of oppressed peoples worldwide, the International Ota Benga Day has been established as a day of reflection, education, and celebration of human dignity.

This annual observance stands as a powerful acknowledgment of the injustices faced by individuals throughout history and a commitment to upholding equality and human rights.

Ota Benga’s story symbolizes the experiences of millions who have endured discrimination, slavery, colonization, trafficking, racial profiling, exploitation, and abuse. The day seeks to shed light on these shared histories while promoting global conversations on human rights.

“International Ota Benga Day represents acknowledgment and atonement of injustice in all forms and, at the same time, the celebration of human dignity,” said Musa Drammeh, one of the organizers.

The International Ota Benga Day committee, established in 2023, aims to encourage institutions like the United Nations, African Union, European Union, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and others to recognize and support this global initiative. Through collaboration with diplomatic, cultural, political, and educational entities, the day is envisioned as a worldwide movement toward justice and equality.

The Museum of Africa will host a special discussion on December 10, 2024, as part of the Human Rights Day activities, bringing together human rights advocates, educators, and cultural leaders to reflect on Ota Benga’s legacy and explore paths toward a more equitable world.
