Nigeria: Tragedy strikes in Abuja, ten dead in stampede during church food distribution
A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on Saturday, 21st December 2024, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, when a stampede during a food distribution event left ten people dead, including four children. The incident occurred around 6:30 AM as the church was distributing food items to vulnerable and elderly members of the community.
The stampede, which resulted in the tragic loss of life, also left eight others injured, with varying degrees of severity. Four of the injured victims have received treatment and were discharged, while the remaining individuals are currently receiving ongoing medical care.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh. “We sympathize with the families of the deceased and wish the injured a swift and full recovery,” Adeh said, offering condolences to the affected families and community.
This devastating incident has raised concerns about safety protocols during mass gatherings, especially when vulnerable populations are involved.
The police have promised to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and ensure that measures are taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
