President Barrow Champions Diaspora Engagement and Development ahead of ECOWAS Summit in Nigeria

President Adama Barrow of The Gambia touched down in Abuja, Nigeria, on Saturday for the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit. Upon arrival, he was warmly received by Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development.

After settling into his residence, President Barrow met with members of the Gambian community in Nigeria, where discussions highlighted his administration’s strides and future plans. The atmosphere was one of gratitude and optimism, as attendees lauded the President’s commitment to development.

Mr. Saikou Juwara commended Barrow for prioritizing education, noting, “The expansion of vocational and technical education in The Gambia helps students develop skills and create employment opportunities.” This initiative has been pivotal in empowering Gambian youth.

A strong call for electoral reform also resonated during the meeting. Kaduna State Representative Mr. Sarjo Jamana advocated for diaspora voting, urging its inclusion in the electoral system. In response, President Barrow acknowledged the importance of such a step, stating, “I desire for all Gambians, including those living abroad, to participate in the electoral process. However, the decision ultimately rests with the National Assembly.”

Concerns about consular services were also raised. Ansumana Tunkara, the Gambian consular representative in Togo, appealed for fingerprint machines to facilitate identity card and passport registration. Echoing this, Mr. Eddy, the Gambian Consul in Ghana, urged the government to expedite the appointment of an honorary consul in Ghana.

Hon. Mamadou Tangara, Minister for Foreign Affairs, assured the community, noting, “The Ministry has already requested the appointment and is awaiting approval from the Ghanaian government.”

Gambian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Muhammed Papa Njie, expressed his appreciation to President Barrow for prioritizing engagement with citizens abroad. He encouraged the community to register for the embassy’s upcoming digital platform to improve communication and services.

In his closing remarks, President Barrow motivated the youth, saying, “Work hard and invest in your country to become agents of change.” He also announced plans to introduce inclusive identity cards for all Gambians, reinforcing his commitment to national unity and progress.

This visit underscored President Barrow’s dedication to connecting with the diaspora, fostering development, and enhancing Gambian representation across West Africa.
