President Barrow hails $1.72 million Chinese aid for food security, healthcare
In a significant boost to The Gambia’s development efforts, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has donated rice worth 10 million RMB Yuan (approximately 98.65 million Dalasis) and medical equipment valued at $1 million (72 million Dalasis) under its Development Assistance Programme, China Aid.
The donation, which is part of China’s South-South Cooperation Assistance Programme, aims to support developing nations in combating poverty and improving living standards.
The annual food donation will be distributed to needy communities across The Gambia, enhancing food security at the grassroots level.
In addition to the rice donation, The Gambia’s healthcare sector received a significant boost with the provision of four medicalized ambulances and assorted medical supplies. This donation aligns with the Gambian government’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage.
President Adama Barrow, while acknowledging the generosity of the Chinese government during the official handover ceremony, remarked, “The donations will go a long way in accelerating the Government’s efforts towards universal health coverage.”
The event also served as an opportunity for both nations to reaffirm their strong diplomatic relations. The Chinese Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Liu Jin, praised President Barrow for fostering bilateral cooperation and promised further assistance.
“China will send more health professionals to the country to strengthen the health system. I encourage young Gambians to visit China through our exchange programmes to enhance mutual understanding and friendship,” Liu Jin stated.
The ceremony, held at the State House in Banjul, was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Ministers of Health and Agriculture, Dr. Amadou Lamin Samateh and Dr. Demba Sabally, respectively. Other dignitaries present included Mod. K. Ceesay, Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, and Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister for Information, Media, and Broadcasting.
The partnership between The Gambia and China continues to grow stronger, with both nations emphasizing their mutual commitment to a “win-win” relationship. The support from China is expected to significantly improve the lives of Gambians, reinforcing the shared vision of prosperity and development.
