President Barrow lauds military for Exercise Kansala 2024, emphasizes role in national security

President Adama Barrow, as Commander-in-Chief of The Gambia Armed Forces, recently received briefings on a joint military exercise, Exercise Kansala 2024, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and boosting national security.

Speaking on the exercise, President Barrow praised the military for its commitment to maintaining physical fitness and readiness.

He highlighted the critical role of the military in a strong and stable democracy, emphasizing that its primary function is to ensure national security without interfering in democratic processes.

“When the military adheres to its designated role, it fosters a supportive and peaceful environment, ultimately assuring the people, investors, and development partners,” President Barrow stated.

He further added, “The private sector is key in development, but will always look for a peaceful environment.”

The President also urged the armed forces to remain professional in their duties, assuring them of his government’s continued support. He underscored that the military is a noble profession, vital for national stability and growth.

During the briefing, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Momar Cham, reiterated the importance of ongoing training and equipping the forces. He expressed gratitude to President Barrow for his support, which allows the military to focus on its core mandate. Lt. General Cham also detailed the collaboration with other security services under the Ministry of the Interior in carrying out the joint field exercise.

Brigadier General Sait Njie, the Army Commander, outlined the operations for the joint field training, which is based on the concept: “The best form of welfare for troops is first-class training.”

The five-day exercise, running from December 19 to 23, 2024, will include military drills, health screenings, and community support activities, fostering both operational readiness and social responsibility.

The briefing was also attended by the National Security Adviser, Abubakar Jeng, and other key security personnel. Exercise Kansala 2024 forms part of the Security Sector Reforms introduced in 2017, aimed at modernizing and strengthening The Gambia Armed Forces.
