AU, ECOWAS Deepen Strategic Partnership on Peace and Security at Addis Ababa Meeting

The African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) and the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) convened their 2nd Joint Consultative Meeting at the ambassadorial level on May 16, 2025, at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The meeting marked a significant step forward in strengthening inter-regional cooperation on peace, security, and governance across the continent. It focused on aligning efforts under the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the African Governance Architecture (AGA), and the AU Master Roadmap to Silence the Guns by 2030.
Both institutions reaffirmed their shared commitment to collaborative action, highlighting the importance of “preventive diplomacy, mediation, and coordinated peace support operations” in resolving Africa’s complex security challenges.
The partnership is guided by the principles of “subsidiarity, complementarity, and comparative advantage,” ensuring that regional and continental efforts remain unified and effective.
The joint meeting emphasized the urgency of addressing ongoing conflicts and promoting sustainable peace through enhanced dialogue and operational synergy between the AU and ECOWAS.
