Ghana Grants Indefinite Residence to 500 Ivorian Refugees in Landmark Integration Move

In a significant humanitarian gesture, the Government of Ghana has granted indefinite residence permits to 500 Ivorian refugees, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing commitment to refugee protection and integration.

The official ceremony, held in Accra, was attended by dignitaries including the Ivorian Ambassador to Ghana, representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Ghana Refugee Board, and the Ghana Immigration Service.

Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, who presented the residence permits on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior, noted that the decision reflects Ghana’s long-standing tradition of hospitality and support for displaced persons.

He, however, reminded the beneficiaries of the responsibilities that come with their new status.

“This status is revocable,” Mubarak stated, “and we urge all recipients to respect and abide by the laws of Ghana.”

Officials from UNHCR and the Ghana Refugee Board applauded the initiative, describing it as a bold step toward sustainable integration and regional solidarity. The move is expected to improve the quality of life for the Ivorian refugees and open up new opportunities in education, employment, and social services.

Ghana’s decision aligns with international best practices in refugee protection and underscores its leadership in fostering peace and stability in West Africa.
