AU Urges Dialogue as U.S. Travel Ban Raises Concerns Over Relations

The African Union Commission has issued a statement expressing concern over the recent travel restrictions imposed by the Government of the United States, which affect several countries, including some from the African continent.

The statement, issued from the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa under the banner of the African Union’s 2025 theme “Year of Reparations: Justice for Africans & People of African Descent through Reparations”, acknowledges the right of nations to safeguard their borders but emphasizes the need for a fair and balanced approach.

“While recognising the sovereign right of all nations to protect their borders and ensure the security of their citizens, the African Union Commission respectfully appeals to the United States to exercise this right in a manner that is balanced, evidence-based, and reflective of the long-standing partnership between the United States and Africa,” the commission noted.

The AU highlighted its unease about the broader implications of the travel ban, warning of its potential to disrupt long-standing ties in education, business, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.

The commission stressed the shared goals and intertwined destinies of the two regions.

“The Commission remains concerned about the potential negative impact of such measures on people-to-people ties, educational exchange, commercial engagement, and the broader diplomatic relations that have been carefully nurtured over decades. Africa and the United States share mutual interests in promoting peace, prosperity, and global cooperation,” the statement read.

In a call for diplomacy over division, the African Union Commission urged the U.S. Administration to revisit its approach and to prioritize dialogue with the countries affected.

“The African Union Commission respectfully calls upon the U.S. Administration to consider adopting a more consultative approach and to engage in constructive dialogue with the countries concerned. The Commission appeals for transparent communication, and where necessary, collaborative efforts to address any underlying issues that may have informed this decision,” it added.

Signaling its willingness to be part of the solution, the Commission concluded by reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Africa–U.S. cooperation.

“The Commission stands ready to support efforts that promote understanding, resolve concerns, and strengthen cooperation between Africa and the United States.”

This development comes at a time when Africa is intensifying its advocacy for global justice and reparative dialogue, aligning with the continental theme of the year. The AU’s appeal underscores the importance of sustaining international partnerships built on mutual respect, consultation, and cooperation.
