Mayor Malick-Lowe Appointed Gambia National Team’s Assistant Coach

Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick-Lowe, has been appointed as the assistant coach for The Gambia National Team, a development that is set to send ripples throughout the football fraternity.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Mayor Malick-Lowe revealed, “I am officially appointed as assistant coach for The Gambia National Team. It was not announced earlier as we were trying to manage some regulatory requirements that were a bit confusing.”

The 50-year-old politician-cum-coach disclosed that she was headhunted for the role due to her unique profile as a female mayor. “My boss said I was headhunted because I am the only female mayor and they were looking for a female mayor as an assistant coach,” she stated.

Mayor Malick-Lowe will be working alongside Head Coach Johnathan Mckisntry from Ireland, and her responsibilities will include scheduling friendlies, translating local languages to the team, negotiating accommodation with other mayors, and updating the status of team members to their families.

One of the most notable aspects of her role will be taking the team on 10-kilometer jogging sessions every other day when they are in The Gambia. Additionally, she will be responsible for translating the local government act for the team to understand their local rights.

The appointment has come with a hefty price tag, with Mayor Malick-Lowe set to earn $50,000 per month, plus a $10,000 bonus per match. The contract is for five years, effective June 1st.

While the news is set to generate controversy, Mayor Malick-Lowe remains undeterred. “I expect a lot of criticism, but nothing can make me let this go,” she declared. “Fellow Gambians, it was just an announcement, and trust me, whether you criticize or are in favor, I love you all, the way I love our kingdom – The Mighty Jarra!!”

As the football world reacts to this unprecedented development, one thing is certain – Mayor Rohey Malick-Lowe is set to make history as the first female mayor to hold this position in The Gambia National Team.
