Tinubu Transfers ECOWAS Chairmanship to Sierra Leone’s President Bio

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has officially handed over the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.

The transition occurred during the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja.

President Tinubu, who served as ECOWAS chairman for two years, reflected on his tenure with optimism. He emphasized that his leadership prioritized dialogue and regional peacebuilding efforts.

“We have pursued a path of regional dialogue and strengthened our commitment to peace and stability in West Africa,” Tinubu said.

Taking over the mantle, President Bio identified four core priorities for his chairmanship: restoring democratic governance in member states, enhancing regional security, promoting economic integration, and strengthening the institutional credibility of ECOWAS.

The peaceful transition signals a renewed commitment among member states to unify efforts in addressing the sub-region’s pressing political and socio-economic challenges.
