South African season kickoff: Sundowns triumph, Chiefs draw, Pirates suffer defeat

In the opening matches of the South African league season, the country’s top three clubs experienced varying outcomes. Reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, secured a 2-1 victory against Sekhukhune United, with both teams seeing a player sent off during the intense clash. Namibian Peter Shalulile and new signing Lucas Ribeiro shone for Sundowns, both finding the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs, aiming to break an eight-season trophy drought, played out a lackluster goalless draw against perennial strugglers Chippa United. The Chiefs’ new coach, Molefi Ntseki, faced criticism regarding his appointment but remained focused on his team’s performance.

On the other hand, Orlando Pirates, considered the strongest contenders to challenge Sundowns, had a disappointing start to the season. Despite dominating possession in the match against Stellenbosch, they suffered a 1-0 defeat after conceding an Antonio van Wyk goal just before half-time.

The season ahead promises to be challenging for Sundowns, with fixture congestion due to their participation in domestic competitions and the inaugural African Football League, formerly known as the CAF Africa Super League, and the CAF Champions League.

As the league heats up, football fans across South Africa eagerly anticipate the fierce battles and rivalries that will unfold throughout the season.
