Israel-Hamas Conflict: US rejects global calls for cease-fire

National Security spokesperson John Kirby, in a press conference on Monday, recommended “pauses” to facilitate the delivery of aid into Gaza. The U.S. believes this approach is more suitable to address the pressing humanitarian needs in the region.

Israel’s Firm Stand on Hamas

On the other side of this conflict, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that there will be no truce until Hamas is dismantled. He stated, “Calls for a ceasefire are calls for Israel to surrender to Hamas, to surrender to terrorism… this will not happen.”

Efforts to Increase Aid

Mr. Kirby expressed confidence that more relief trucks will be able to pass through Egypt and reach Gaza. The U.S. has engaged with the Israeli government in discussions to raise the daily total of lorries crossing the border to around 100, aiming to alleviate the dire circumstances.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Despite these efforts, Mr. Kirby acknowledged that more aid is required to address the worsening situation in Gaza. Prior to the conflict, about 500 trucks per day were entering Gaza, according to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini. The conflict’s toll on Gaza has been significant, with numerous casualties and immense destruction.

In a separate development, on Monday, Natalie Raanan, an Israeli hostage held by Hamas, was confirmed to have returned to her home in Chicago. This news was conveyed by Yinam Cohen, Israel’s general consul to the Midwest, providing a glimmer of hope amid the ongoing crisis.
