Israel strikes Gaza amid escalating tensions with US
In a dramatic turn of events, Israel conducted airstrikes in Gaza on Thursday, further exacerbating tensions with the United States.
The strikes come as Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor to US President Joe Biden, is set to arrive in Jerusalem for talks amid a growing divide over the US urging restraint on its ally.
The conflict, now entering its third month, originated from the October 7 attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to Israeli officials.
The toll on Gaza has been devastating, with over 18,600 casualties, primarily women and children, and widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, schools, and hospitals.
Israeli airstrikes on Thursday, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry, claimed the lives of at least 19 people across the Gaza Strip.
Simultaneously, violence surged in the West Bank, where two individuals were reported dead in Israeli strikes in Jenin.
President Biden, previously a staunch supporter of Israel, issued his strongest rebuke of the conflict, condemning Israel’s “indiscriminate bombing” and expressing concern over weakened international support. Despite this, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains resolute, vowing to continue the offensive until victory, regardless of international backing.
Ahead of Sullivan’s arrival in Jerusalem, diplomatic pressure mounts on Israel to protect civilians better.
The UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution for a ceasefire, supported by allies Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
CNN reported that nearly half of Israel’s munitions used in Gaza since October 7 have been unguided, heightening the threat to civilians.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees warned of Gazans facing the “darkest chapter” in their history, with 1.9 million displaced and living in makeshift tents amidst harsh weather conditions. Diseases are spreading, and Gaza’s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, with authorities indicating a shortage of vaccines for children.
In Israel, the army faces growing pressure to limit troop deaths and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
The conflict’s toll on Israeli soldiers has reached 115, with 10 soldiers lost on Tuesday, the deadliest day since the ground assault began on October 27.
As the conflict continues, fears persist about its potential broadening, with daily incidents along Israel’s border with Lebanon, where Iran-backed Hezbollah is based.
Washington and London announced further sanctions against Hamas, targeting key officials linked to the organization’s violent agenda.
The situation remains tense as the international community grapples with the complexities of the conflict, hoping for a resolution that can bring an end to the suffering on both sides.
