Nunez’s goal drought sparks passion, earns praise from Liverpool’s assistant manager

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, facing a goal drought spanning 10 games, is set to unleash his fiery spirit in Wednesday’s League Cup quarter-final against West Ham, according to Assistant Manager Pep Lijnders.

Despite not finding the back of the net since November’s League Cup clash with Bournemouth, Lijnders emphasizes that Nunez’s contributions extend beyond scoring.

Lijnders stated on Tuesday, “Darwin is full of desire, and if we only judge players on goals, that would be unfair.

His game involves much more than scoring; he’s a key part of our collective effort.”

The assistant manager highlighted the strong connection between Nunez and star player Mo Salah, emphasizing their teamwork and mutual assistance.

While Nunez’s goal tally has taken a temporary dip, Lijnders praised his overall improvement this season. The 24-year-old Uruguayan, with seven goals to his name this season, arrived at Anfield from Benfica in 2022.

Lijnders acknowledged Nunez’s defensive contributions, his work rate, and the vital role he plays as a reference point in the team.

Reflecting on the tactical shift, Lijnders mentioned, “It’s been a while since we played with a false nine, and now it’s Darwin Nunez. He is learning, but I like a lot, and I think this guy is full of fire. That’s what our stadium likes, and that’s what we need to lead the line in this way. He can only become better.”

As Liverpool prepares to face West Ham in the League Cup quarter-final, the spotlight is on Nunez, who, despite the goal drought, is poised to bring his all-around contributions and fiery spirit to the forefront, aiming to secure a pivotal win for the Reds.
