Iga Swiatek’s dominance propels Poland into United Cup quarter-finals
World number one Iga Swiatek has led Poland to a 2-1 victory over Spain, securing a spot in the quarter-finals of the United Cup.
Swiatek left no room for mercy as she triumphed over Sara Sorribes Tormo in a commanding 6-2, 6-1 singles victory.
Paired with Hubert Hurkacz, the dynamic duo sealed the deal with an astonishing 6-0, 6-0 mixed doubles triumph in just 53 minutes.
Despite a setback in the opening singles, where Hurkacz fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the top-seeded Poles finished Group A play with an impeccable 2-0 record, eagerly anticipating their next challenge in the quarter-finals.
Swiatek, who has lost only seven games in two singles matches leading up to the Australian Open, expressed the mixed doubles experience as valuable, stating, “It’s lessons for the future and great practice.”
Hurkacz acknowledged his teammate’s contribution, admitting, “She carried me throughout the whole match, in every game she was making amazing shots.”
Meanwhile, in Sydney, Casper Ruud showcased his prowess by securing his second consecutive singles win and guiding Norway to victory over Croatia in the mixed doubles.
World number 24 Donna Vekic faced a tough battle against Malene Helgo, prevailing with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory, providing the Croats with an initial lead in the Group F tie. However, Ruud swiftly turned the tide with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 win over Borna Coric before teaming up with Ulrikke Eikeri for a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 mixed doubles triumph.
The victory came as a rebound for Norway, following their loss to the Netherlands over the weekend.
Speaking of his successful start to the year, Ruud, ranked 11th globally, stated, “I’m motivated for the new year, I’m fresh and I’m ready.” Having dropped serve only once in two matches, Ruud showcased his dedication to improvement by emphasizing his work on volleys.
Vekic, who needed nearly three hours to overcome a resilient Helgo, praised her opponent, saying, “She’s a really good player, and her ranking doesn’t do her justice.” Vekic, a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open last year, highlighted the significance of her serve in the decisive third set.
As the United Cup action continues, Alexander Zverev-led Germany faces France in Group D, while defending champions United States go head-to-head with Australia in Perth.
