Sri Lanka’s resilient batting display secures dominant 308/6 against Afghanistan in 2nd ODI
Sri Lanka displayed a resilient batting performance, reaching a formidable total of 308 for six in the second one-day international against Afghanistan.
Despite early setbacks with the openers departing cheaply, the middle-order came to the rescue, propelled by four crucial half-centuries.
After the initial stumble, Kusal Mendis (61) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (52) formed a pivotal partnership, adding 103 runs for the third wicket. Their innings, however, were marred by dropped catches, ultimately leading to their dismissal in the span of eight deliveries.
Samarawickrama, looking promising, hit one straight to mid-wicket, breaking the partnership. Mendis attempted to take on Azmatullah Omarzai but failed to clear a fielder at deep mid-wicket, contributing to Omarzai’s three-wicket haul.
Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage then orchestrated a crucial 111-run stand for the fifth wicket, displaying resilience and skill. Liyanage, achieving his second ODI half-century with flair, reached the milestone with a straight six off Noor Ahmad, only to be dismissed on the very next ball.
Asalanka, undeterred by Liyanage’s departure, showcased exceptional batting prowess, remaining unbeaten on 97 off 74 deliveries. He guided Sri Lanka past the 300-run mark with a boundary in the last over, comprising nine fours and two sixes.
Afghanistan’s fielding performance was far from flawless, with five dropped catches contributing to Sri Lanka’s robust total.
Sri Lanka now leads the three-match series 1-0, following their earlier victory in the sole Test by 10 wickets. The final ODI is scheduled for Wednesday in Kandy, with the series set to conclude with three T20 matches, all to be held in Dambulla.
