Banjul: Mayor Lowe leads youth skills assessment to combat unemployment

In a significant stride towards enhancing youth development and combating unemployment, Mayor Malick Lowe of Banjul spearheaded the validation of the Youth Skills and Training Needs Assessment, a crucial initiative aimed at mapping out demand and interests in vocational training within the city.

The assessment, a collaborative effort involving stakeholders from various sectors, is poised to yield actionable insights, providing vital findings, solutions, and recommendations tailored to bolstering youth empowerment.

Mayor Lowe emphasized the importance of this endeavor in aligning training programs with the dynamic demands of the job market, a strategic move aimed at boosting the employability of Banjul’s youth population and curbing unemployment rates.

“This assessment is pivotal in shaping the future of our youth by ensuring they possess skills that are not only in demand but also essential for their professional growth,” Mayor Lowe remarked during the validation event.

The meticulously crafted assessment, thanks to the diligent work of consulting firm SMD Policy and Management Group, received widespread acclaim from key figures including the UNDP Resident Representative, the Deputy Youth Adviser to the President of the Republic, and members of the National Youth Council, underscoring its importance in driving evidence-based policy-making.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Mayor Lowe extended thanks to all involved stakeholders, including city councilors, staff, and enthusiastic young participants who contributed to the validation process. He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by organizations such as the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and the Banjul City Council (BCC) in providing crucial funding and support for this transformative initiative.

The assessment’s outcomes are poised to guide policymakers and stakeholders in strategically allocating resources, targeting specific skill gaps identified, and amplifying the impact of investments in youth-focused programs and initiatives across Banjul.

This forward-looking initiative reflects Banjul’s commitment to nurturing a skilled and empowered youth demographic, poised to drive sustainable development and economic growth in the region.
