Nigerian President Tinubu declares April 7 National Police Day

In a resolute move towards transforming Nigeria’s law enforcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined a sweeping agenda aimed at reshaping the nation’s police force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution.

This vision was articulated during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony held at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

President Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, emphasized the urgent need for a complete overhaul of the mindset and practices within the police ranks. He underscored the pivotal role of ongoing reforms in revitalizing the force since assuming office last year.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Tinubu declared the adoption of the first week of April as “Police Week,” culminating in the formal designation of April 7 as “National Police Day” across Nigeria. This commemoration, he explained, reflects a commitment to honoring and humanizing the men and women who serve as the nation’s sentinels.

During his address titled “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” Vice President Shettima lauded the unwavering dedication of the police force amidst unprecedented security challenges facing Nigeria. He applauded their bravery in safeguarding citizens’ lives and property despite daunting odds.

President Tinubu articulated a robust strategy that transcends superficial changes, aiming instead for a profound institutional transformation. Beyond cosmetic alterations, the administration’s agenda prioritizes investments in training, capacity-building, and technological upgrades to empower officers with modern policing expertise.

Highlighting specific reforms, President Tinubu pledged to enhance operational efficiency through the acquisition of advanced equipment, weapons, and armoured carriers. This strategic investment aims to bolster officers’ safety and effectiveness in combat situations, underlining a broader commitment to elevate the status and welfare of police personnel.

The president’s comprehensive approach seeks to align the Nigeria Police Force with the nation’s core values, fostering stability, justice, and order. Emphasizing the importance of ethical governance and accountability, this reform agenda aspires to redefine the institution’s identity and restore public trust.
