Senegalese President Faye strengthens ties with Gambia

In a historic and symbolic visit underscoring the close fraternal relations between Senegal and The Gambia, His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye of Senegal embarked on his inaugural working visit to The Gambia on April 20, 2024.

The visit marked a significant moment in diplomatic relations between the two neighboring nations, highlighting a commitment to deepen collaboration and friendship.


President Faye was warmly welcomed at the Banjul International Airport by His Excellency President Adama Barrow of The Gambia and senior members of the Gambian government, setting the tone for substantive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

During their consultative meeting, the two Heads of State reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the longstanding partnership between their countries.

President Barrow congratulated President Faye on his recent election victory and inauguration, expressing optimism for the progressive initiatives of Senegal’s new government.

The joint communiqué issued following the meeting emphasized the mutual desire to elevate cooperation to a strategic level, particularly through the established Presidential Council aimed at fostering collaboration across various sectors, including security, defense, trade, education, and judiciary.

The leaders acknowledged the historical, geographical, and cultural ties that bind Senegal and The Gambia, underscoring their shared development aspirations. Both Presidents expressed satisfaction with current bilateral relations and committed to intensifying efforts to further bolster cooperation.

Beyond bilateral matters, the discussions extended to regional, continental, and global issues, with a shared commitment to continued consultations and collaboration on matters of mutual interest within organizations such as ECOWAS, AU, UN, and OIC.

President Barrow extended a cordial invitation to President Faye to attend the upcoming OIC Summit in Banjul, recognizing Senegal’s support in ensuring the success of this significant event. President Faye graciously accepted the invitation, lauding the warm hospitality extended by The Gambia.

In a forward-looking approach, the leaders agreed to regular consultations and scheduled the next session of the Senegalo-Gambian Presidential Council to take place in Dakar, Senegal.

The visit concluded with expressions of gratitude and appreciation from both sides, affirming a renewed commitment to strengthen the enduring bond between Senegal and The Gambia.
