IMF urges Kenya to uphold controversial tax measures

Despite foreseeing potential protests against the Finance Bill 2024, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the Kenyan government to persist with its controversial tax proposals.

The IMF assessed the risk of anti-tax demonstrations as ‘medium’ and recommended that the government stand firm, according to Business Daily Africa.

On Wednesday, American politician Ilhan Omar voiced her concerns about the austerity measures imposed by the IMF on Kenya, highlighting their role in escalating the cost of living for Kenyan citizens.

“It’s also crucial to recognize that the International Monetary Fund’s austerity conditions have contributed to the economic hardships facing Kenyan citizens,” Omar stated.

Omar emphasized that these measures often disproportionately impact the most vulnerable segments of society, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Her statement underscores the growing debate over the IMF’s influence on national economic policies and the resultant social ramifications.
