Michael Usi appointed as Malawi’s new vice president
In a significant political development, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has appointed Dr. Michael Bizwick Usi as the new Vice President of Malawi. The appointment, made under Section 84 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, takes immediate effect. Dr. Usi will be sworn in on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 15:00 hours in the Parliament Building.
This appointment comes in the wake of the tragic death of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others in a plane crash at Chikangawa Forest. Dr. Usi, who is the Vice President of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) and was Dr. Chilima’s running mate in the annulled 2019 elections, steps into this pivotal role amid a period of national mourning and transition.
Before his appointment as Vice President, Dr. Usi was serving as the Minister of Natural Resources, where he was recognized for his leadership and commitment to sustainable development.
The nation extends its congratulations to Dr. Michael Usi as he assumes his new role, marking a new chapter in Malawi’s political landscape.
