Tragic wave of deaths linked to drug abuse sparks police investigations across Gambia

The Kotu, Banjul, and Barra Police Departments are investigating a series of mysterious deaths linked to alleged drug abuse involving pills and Kush, which have shocked the nation.

On Friday, June 21, 2024, 26-year-old Aja Majula Hydara from Latrikunda German experienced severe reactions after consuming an alleged drug at Dune Night Club in Palma Rima. She was rushed to Kanifing General Hospital, where she tragically passed away.


The police have arrested 23-year-old Titi Camara, also from Latrikunda German, who is currently assisting with the investigation.

Similarly, the Banjul Police are investigating the sudden death of 20-year-old Alhagie Darboe from Banjul. Darboe reportedly consumed an alleged drug at a club, leading to his death at Ndemban Clinic.

Authorities are actively seeking the arrest of an individual named Balanding, who is suspected of selling the drug to Darboe.

In a related incident, Barra Police are investigating the death of 26-year-old Bubacarr Sarr from Barra. Sarr allegedly consumed Kush, resulting in a severe episode where he self-harmed by cutting off his own tongue. He was pronounced dead at Essau District Hospital on the same day.

In response to these tragic events, the Office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the entire police leadership have issued a plea for public assistance, particularly from parents and youth groups, in combating drug abuse and trafficking. The authorities stress the importance of strengthened cooperation and coordination between the police and the community to restore safety and security.

These incidents highlight a pressing need for increased awareness and preventive measures against drug abuse. The police are committed to thorough investigations and bringing those responsible to justice, while also calling for a collective effort to address this growing issue.
