ECOWAS announces date to launch single currency
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is all set to unveil its long-awaited single currency initiative, known as the ECO.
This highly anticipated development has been spearheaded by Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from the 15 ECOWAS member states.
The introduction of the ECO is a significant milestone in the region’s economic integration efforts. The single currency is a key feature of the three-in-one Identity cards planned by the National Identity Management Commission and is scheduled for roll-out by August.
Prominent figures such as Cape Verde’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Olavo Correia Vice Primeiro-Ministro e Ministro das Finanças, Cote d’Ivoire’s Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Mr. Adama Coulibaly, and Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Mohammed Amin Adam, among others, have played instrumental roles in shaping this vision.
Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, expressed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the successful implementation of the ECO. He highlighted the critical role the single currency will play in fostering economic growth and development in the region.
During the recent meeting, participants expressed a renewed sense of purpose and belief in the immense potential of the ECO. They firmly believe that the introduction of the single currency will reshape the economic landscape of the region and pave the way for a more prosperous future for all member states.
This historic decision marks a significant step forward in West African economics and lays the foundation for a more integrated and prosperous future for the entire region.
