ECOWAS launches $440,000 lifeline for flood victims in liberia

In a bid to alleviate the suffering of flood victims and tackle food insecurity, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has embarked on a comprehensive field monitoring and evaluation mission in Liberia.

The four-day assessment, spearheaded by the ECOWAS Directorate of Humanitarian Aid, aims to evaluate the impact of a humanitarian response initiative valued at over $440,000.

The initiative, officially launched in November 2023, has provided critical assistance to 1,878 families, surpassing the initial target of 1,841 families. Beneficiaries include approximately 10,000 individuals spread across 30 flood-affected communities.

Among these are some of the most vulnerable groups in society: pregnant women, single mothers, people with disabilities, and individuals with no source of income.

The humanitarian project is not just a temporary relief effort but a stepping stone towards long-term resilience and sustainability for affected communities.

Adopting the slogan “Building Back Stronger,” the mission underscores the importance of community resilience and the development of sustainable survival mechanisms.

During the mission, the ECOWAS delegation will engage with community members, local leaders, and other stakeholders to gather insights and feedback on the effectiveness of the aid provided. The aim is to ensure that the assistance not only meets immediate needs but also contributes to the long-term stability and self-sufficiency of the communities.

“We are committed to not just providing aid but also empowering communities to rebuild and thrive post-disaster,” said a spokesperson for the ECOWAS Directorate of Humanitarian Aid. This holistic approach is designed to help communities withstand future adversities and reduce their vulnerability to natural disasters.

The mission’s findings will be crucial in shaping future humanitarian strategies and interventions, ensuring that aid is delivered efficiently and effectively to those in need.

ECOWAS ongoing commitment to humanitarian aid and disaster resilience continues to offer a beacon of hope to many in the region, affirming the organization’s role as a pivotal force in West African development and solidarity.
