Egypt embarks on Africa’s largest wind turbine farm

In a monumental step towards achieving its renewable energy ambitions, Egypt is set to construct Africa’s largest wind turbine farm, a colossal $10 billion project.

The West Sohag Wind Energy Project will break ground in March 2026, with an anticipated completion date in 2032. This ambitious initiative is poised to be among the world’s largest wind farms, generating an impressive 10 gigawatts of power.

The Egyptian government has officially handed over an 852 square kilometer tract of land to a consortium comprising Infinity Power, Hassan Allam, and Masdar. This strategic alliance will spearhead the development of the wind farm, heralding a new era of sustainable energy in the region.

Upon its completion, the wind farm is projected to produce around 48,000 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually. This substantial output will play a critical role in mitigating carbon emissions, with an estimated reduction of approximately 24 million tonnes of CO2 each year. Furthermore, the project is expected to create roughly 23,000 direct and indirect job opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, providing a significant economic boost to the local communities in Asaid.

This landmark project underscores Egypt’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio and reducing its carbon footprint, positioning the nation as a leader in the global transition towards sustainable energy.
