Guinea Conakry: Opposition leaders arrested, detained amidst political unrest
In an exclusive interview with Africa Parrot and New York Parrot correspondents, Toure Mouloukou Souleymane, a core member of the Sekoutoureisme Movement and advisor to Fonike Mengue, shed light on the dire political situation in Guinea Conakry. The opposition leaders, Oumar Sylla, Fonike Mengue, and Mamadou Billo Bah, were arrested and detained by the military a week ago, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
“We are going through a very difficult time in Guinea Conakry. The military is traumatizing and ignoring activists, torturing them, and executing or imprisoning anyone who denounces their behavior,” Souleymane said.
He described the current climate in Guinea Conakry as “total insecurity” and “terror.” “The military does not respect any law, any legislature. They do what they want in the country, and anyone who speaks out against them is hunted down,” Souleymane emphasized.
Regarding the arrested opposition leaders, Souleymane stated, “We don’t know where they are. They are missing. What we know is that heavily armed soldiers and gendarmes came to their houses to collect them. We don’t even know what the charges are against them because they don’t have access to their lawyers.”
Souleymane appealed for international intervention, saying, “We are asking for the help of all movements, all actors, and anyone who can do something to free our friends and get the country out of this situation.”
Amnesty International has urged the government to immediately release the two detained leaders, amplifying the calls for their freedom.
