Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh assassinated in Tehran
Ismail Haniyeh, a leading figure of Hamas, was assassinated in Iran shortly after attending the inauguration of the country’s new president. The confirmation came early Wednesday from both Iranian officials and the militant group.
The assassination, which remains unclaimed, has immediately sparked speculation about Israeli involvement. Israel had previously vowed to target Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders following the group’s deadly attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and approximately 250 hostages being taken.
A senior Palestinian official in the West Bank, Hussein al-Sheikh, has condemned the killing as a “cowardly act” and called for greater unity among Palestinian forces. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas echoed these sentiments, labeling the assassination a “dangerous development.”
Hamas released a statement attributing Haniyeh’s death to a “Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran.” The group hailed Haniyeh as a martyr, vowing that his death would not go unanswered. Senior Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouk warned of repercussions, emphasizing that the assassination would not go unpunished.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) had previously listed Haniyeh among those sought for arrest over actions during the Israel-Hamas conflict. This latest development comes amid ongoing efforts by the Biden administration to facilitate a cease-fire and hostage release deal between Hamas and Israel. CIA Director Bill Burns and other senior U.S. officials have been engaged in high-level talks with regional partners to de-escalate the situation.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, providing no specifics on the method of assassination. Haniyeh, who had been living in exile in Qatar since 2019, was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
While Israel has not commented on the assassination, the incident adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile Middle Eastern landscape. As the world watches, the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict and raises questions about the future stability of the region.
