NASENI trains Osun youth in modern shoemaking, tailoring

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has kickstarted a groundbreaking skills acquisition programme aimed at empowering the youth of Ife, Osun State with modern shoemaking and tailoring techniques. This initiative, part of a broader strategic effort to foster industrialisation and economic growth, commenced on Monday, July 8, 2024, and will run through to Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at the NASENI Skill Acquisition Centre in Ife Federal Constituency.

The three-day intensive workshop was inaugurated by NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, who was represented by Engr. Dr. Olayode Adesola Olasupo, Director of Manufacturing Services at the Engineering Infrastructure Directorate. During the opening ceremony, Dr. Olasupo highlighted the programme’s objective to provide participants with practical, hands-on experience in contemporary tailoring and shoemaking techniques, equipping them with valuable skills to enhance their employability and entrepreneurial prospects.

Mr. Halilu emphasized the critical role of NASENI in Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda. “NASENI, as an Agency under the Presidency, is mandated to build a robust Science and Engineering infrastructure that supports home-grown industrialisation. To fulfill this mandate, it is essential to develop critical skills among our nation’s youth. This is why we have established several NASENI Skill Acquisition Centres across Nigeria. The Ife Federal Constituency Centre, where we are today, is the first of its kind in Osun State,” he remarked.

The training initiative is also a key component of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to eradicate poverty, stimulate economic growth, and foster job creation. “This programme is a testament to our commitment to these goals,” Mr. Halilu added.

The NASENI Skill Acquisition Centre in Ife represents a significant investment in the future of Osun State’s youth, providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s competitive job market. The Centre is poised to become a cornerstone of the local economy, driving innovation and fostering a new generation of skilled artisans.

As the training progresses, participants will engage in a series of workshops and practical sessions designed to hone their skills and inspire creativity.
