NATO appoints special envoy for Middle East, North Africa, Sahel

In a move to address security challenges in its southern neighborhood, NATO has announced the appointment of Javier Colomina as the special representative for the defense alliance’s “southern neighborhood,” which includes the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahel region. Colomina, who previously served as NATO’s special representative in the Caucasus and Central Asia, brings extensive experience in dealing with NATO partners to his new role.

The instability in the southern and eastern Mediterranean regions poses a security challenge for NATO member countries in Europe, as it contributes to irregular migration to the bloc.

This appointment aims to strengthen NATO’s important work in the South and enhance its efforts to address the security concerns in the region.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the significance of the Middle East, North Africa, and the Sahel regions to the alliance. With NATO member Spain having territories in North Africa, including Melilla and Ceuta, the appointment of a special envoy will facilitate closer collaboration and coordination in addressing the security issues in the region.

The decision to appoint a special representative for the southern neighborhood was made during a recent NATO summit in Washington, where leaders agreed on the importance of this strategic move.

This appointment demonstrates NATO’s commitment to ensuring the stability and security of its member countries and the broader region.
