Nigerian students slam President Tinubu over removal of fuel subsidy
The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, has faced criticism from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for the removal of fuel subsidies.
According to NANS, this decision has not yielded any positive results but has instead caused hardships for Nigerians and resulted in fuel scarcity.
In a statement issued by NANS National Clerk of the Senate, Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, the students’ body expressed deep concern over the high cost and persistent scarcity of petrol in the country. Despite the removal of fuel subsidies, the crisis continues to affect the economy and the well-being of students nationwide.
The statement emphasized that Nigerians are facing unprecedented hardships and long queues at petrol stations, contrary to President Tinubu’s promise that fuel queues would disappear after the subsidy removal. The exorbitant cost of petrol has also led to increased transportation fares and higher prices of essential goods and services, further exacerbating the already high cost of living.
NANS called on the government to take swift and decisive action to address the fuel crisis, as it has worsened over the past year. The students’ body expressed disappointment and urged the government to prioritize the welfare and academic pursuits of students, as well as the overall well-being of Nigerians.
This critique from NANS highlights the need for the government to reevaluate its approach to fuel subsidies and find effective solutions to alleviate the hardships faced by the Nigerian people.
